Denier
Denier measures the linear density of a yarn: the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of it. Higher denier means thicker, heavier, tougher yarn.
A 20D fabric is light and packs small; a 70D fabric of the same construction resists abrasion far better and weighs more. Denier tells you nothing about waterproofing, only about the yarn the fabric is woven from.
Reading denier on a spec sheet

You will sometimes see two numbers, such as 40D x 70D. That means warp and weft yarns differ, usually with the heavier yarn running in the direction that takes more abrasion.
Where it matters for travel
The place denier shows up first is under a pack strap. A loaded rucksack worn daily on the same shoulder will wear a 20D face fabric visibly within a couple of weeks of hard travel, and leave a 70D one untouched. If you carry a light day bag, the difference rarely matters over a normal trip.
What it does not mean
Denier is not a measure of strength on its own. Weave density, yarn type and any reinforcing grid all matter. A well-constructed 30D ripstop can outlast a loosely woven 70D plain weave. Treat denier as one input, not a ranking.
