Why it matters more than people think

When DWR fails, the jacket does not leak. It stops breathing. Moisture from your own body condenses on the inside, you feel damp, and you conclude the jacket has failed. This is called wet-out, and it is the single most common reason a two-year-old shell feels worse than a new one.

You can test it in ten seconds. Run water over the outer face. If it beads and rolls off, the finish is intact. If the fabric darkens and absorbs, the DWR needs renewing.

What wears it out

Dirt, body oils, abrasion and washing, roughly in that order. Dirt is the biggest culprit, which creates an awkward tension: the jacket needs cleaning to work properly, and cleaning wears the finish down. The resolution is to wash rarely but properly and spot clean in between.

Renewing it

Spray-on treatments go on the outer face only, which preserves breathability and is the right choice for a lined jacket. Wash-in treatments coat the whole garment including the inside, which is simpler but can reduce breathability.

Apply to a clean, damp garment, spray evenly, and wipe off excess. Many products suggest heat activation in a tumble dryer. Do not do that with a garment whose care instructions say no tumble drying, which includes VEAR shells.

A note on chemistry

DWR formulations vary and the industry has been moving away from certain fluorinated chemistries. We do not publish a chemistry claim for our own DWR because we have no test to support one, and we would treat any unsupported claim on this subject with suspicion whoever makes it.
