Pack a three-layer system rather than one garment per condition: a next-to-skin layer you can wash in a sink, a mid layer for warmth, and a shell that stops wind and rain. Nine to twelve garments cover roughly 0 °C to 30 °C.

The reason a carry-on works across climates is that layers combine. Two mid layers under a shell handle a cold morning; the shell alone handles a warm downpour; the base layer alone handles a hot afternoon. You are not packing outfits, you are packing a system with a small number of parts that recombine. Get the shell right and the rest is laundry logistics.

Why layering beats packing for conditions

The instinct when you look at a two-week forecast spanning 5 °C to 28 °C is to pack for both ends: a warm coat and some t-shirts. It produces a heavy bag and a lot of dead weight, because the warm coat does nothing for eleven of the fourteen days and the t-shirts do nothing for the other three.

Layering works because insulation is additive and the functions are separable. Three thin layers trap more air, and therefore more warmth, than one thick layer of the same total mass, and you can shed them one at a time as the day warms up. More usefully, each layer does a job the others do not:

  • The base layer manages moisture. Its job is to move sweat away from your skin so you do not get chilled when you stop moving.
  • The mid layer traps air. Its job is warmth, and it is the layer you add or remove most often.
  • The shell stops weather. Its job is wind and rain, and it does nothing for warmth by itself.

Confusing these is the most common packing mistake. A heavily insulated waterproof coat merges the mid layer and shell permanently, which means that on a warm wet day your only rain protection is also a warm coat. That is exactly the situation a traveller crossing climates wants to avoid. A three-layer system works better than one very warm jacket if your trip crosses several climates, and it is smaller in the bag.

The trade-off is honest: a dedicated system is more things to manage, and on a trip that never leaves one climate band it is over-engineering. If you are going to Lisbon in June for five days, take clothes. This article is about the harder case.

The nine-to-twelve garment core

This is the set we would build around. Quantities assume laundry access roughly every four to five days, which is realistic in almost any city and in most guesthouses.

That lands between nine and twelve pieces depending on season, and it fits a 35 to 40 litre bag with room for shoes, electronics and toiletries. The variable is the insulated jacket: it is the bulkiest single item and the first thing to cut if the forecast never drops below about 10 °C.

Two things deliberately absent: a second pair of shoes beyond what you wear, and cotton. Cotton holds water, loses all insulating value when wet, and takes a day to dry in a humid room. It is a fine choice at home and a poor one in a carry-on.

Choosing base layers: merino, synthetic, or both

The base layer choice comes down to a trade between odour resistance and durability. Merino wool resists smell for days, feels comfortable across a wide temperature range, and is worth the money for exactly this reason on a trip where washing is intermittent. It is also more delicate and slower to dry than synthetic.

Synthetic base layers wick faster, dry faster, cost less and survive more abuse. They also start smelling within a day of hard use, which on a one-bag trip is a practical problem rather than a cosmetic one.

Whatever you choose, wash it in a sink and hang it to dry. A merino t-shirt rinsed at night is wearable by morning in most climates; in a humid one, roll it in a towel and stand on the towel first, which removes most of the drying time.

The shell is the piece that decides the trip

If you spend money on one garment, spend it here. A shell is the only item that fails catastrophically. A mediocre t-shirt is mildly annoying; a shell that wets through on day one turns a fortnight into a logistics problem.

What to actually check, in order of how much it will affect you:

  1. Are the seams taped? Untaped seams leak regardless of the fabric rating. This matters more than any number on the swing tag.
  2. Can you ventilate it? Pit zips, a two-way front zip, or open cuffs move more moisture than any membrane does when you are walking fast with a bag.
  3. Does the hood work? A hood that does not adjust is a hood that blows off or blocks your peripheral vision at a road crossing.
  4. What is the waterproof rating, and to what standard? Around 10,000 mm handles city rain; 20,000 mm covers pack straps and sitting on wet ground. Above that the number stops mattering.
  5. What method produced the breathability figure? This is where most comparisons go wrong, because the same fabric can be quoted at very different numbers depending on the test used.

That last point is worth dwelling on, because it is the least understood thing in outdoor clothing. Breathability figures in g/m²/24h come from at least four different test methods that produce substantially different results, and RET figures come from a completely different apparatus and cannot be converted. Building for a temperature range

This is the matrix we use when deciding what actually goes in the bag. It assumes moderate activity, walking rather than sitting, and adds a layer for anyone who runs cold.

Notice what does not change: the shell appears in almost every row. That is the argument for buying one good one rather than two mediocre ones. Notice also that the insulated jacket only earns its space below about 10 °C, which is the single biggest packing decision on most trips.

Wind deserves separate mention. A 10 °C day with 30 km/h of wind feels dramatically colder than a still one, and wind is what most people underestimate in places like Iceland, Patagonia and coastal Britain. A shell that blocks wind is doing more for your comfort in those conditions than the insulation underneath it.

Laundry, drying and the four-day cycle

A carry-on wardrobe is really a laundry schedule with clothes attached. The system above assumes you wash something roughly every second night, which takes about ten minutes.

The practical method: rinse in the sink with a little travel detergent or plain shampoo, squeeze without wringing, lay flat on a hotel towel, roll the towel tightly and press or stand on it. That single step removes most of the water and typically halves drying time. Hang over the shower rail or on a short line.

What dries overnight reliably: synthetic base layers, underwear, socks. What often does not: merino in a humid room, thick fleece, anything cotton. Plan around that rather than fighting it, and in genuinely humid places like Singapore or Bangkok, favour synthetics for the items you need turned around fastest.

Do not wash your shell on this schedule. Technical shells should be washed rarely, with a technical detergent rather than ordinary powder, never with fabric softener, and air-dried. Looking normal: the smart-casual floor

The failure mode of technical clothing is looking like you are about to summit something while ordering coffee. In most of the cities people actually travel to, there is a dress floor: a restaurant, a workplace visit, a family dinner, a nice bar.

Three things carry most of the weight here. Plain dark colours read as clothing rather than equipment. Trousers with a normal cut and no visible technical detailing will pass almost anywhere. And a shell in black or navy without high-visibility panels or heavy branding sits fine over a shirt.

This is a genuine trade-off, not a free lunch. Reflective detailing that looks out of place at dinner is exactly what you want cycling home in the dark, and the smart-casual jacket is usually the less useful one on a trail. The compromise most travellers want is a plain shell with discreet reflective elements rather than either extreme.

Footwear, and the two-shoe rule

Shoes are the heaviest, bulkiest things in a carry-on and the hardest to compress, so the rule is simple: wear one pair, pack at most one more, and make the pair you wear the bulky one.

The pair you wear should handle the worst thing the trip will throw at you, which for most travellers is a long day of walking on wet pavement. The packed pair, if you take one, is the light one: something flat that fills with socks. Sandals for a hot trip, plain leather-look trainers for a trip with a dress floor.

Waterproof shoes are a genuine trade-off rather than an upgrade. A waterproof membrane in a shoe keeps splashes out and also keeps sweat in, and once water gets over the collar, a waterproof shoe stays wet far longer than a breathable one that drains and dries. For hot, wet climates, a fast-draining, fast-drying shoe usually beats a waterproof one. For cold, wet ones, the membrane wins.

Socks do more work here than people credit. Two pairs of merino socks will outperform four pairs of cotton in the same volume, dry overnight, and are the single cheapest upgrade to a walking-heavy trip.

Getting it into the bag

A 35 to 40 litre bag is the practical ceiling for carry-on across most airlines, though the limits vary and low-cost carriers are stricter than legacy ones. Check the specific airline rather than assuming, and check it again for the return leg if you are flying two different carriers.

Rolling versus folding is mostly a wash for volume, and rolling wins slightly on wrinkles for synthetics. Compression cubes genuinely reduce volume for soft items like base layers and fleece; they do nothing for shoes and can crush an insulated jacket's loft if you leave it compressed for weeks.

Two habits that save more space than any packing technique. First, wear the bulkiest items on the plane: shell, fleece and heavy shoes. That is free volume, and airlines do not weigh what you are wearing. Second, leave the toiletries at home and buy them on arrival unless you are going somewhere genuinely remote. Liquids are heavy, restricted at security, and available everywhere.

Carry-on liquid rules change and vary by airport, including at airports that have installed newer scanners and then reverted. Check the rules for your specific departure airport close to the date rather than relying on what was true last year.
