The One-Bag Travel Clothing System
One-bag travel works when your clothes form a system with no single-purpose items: every garment either layers with the others or replaces one of them. Nine to twelve pieces plus laundry every four days covers trips of any length.
The constraint that decides everything is not bag size, it is laundry interval. Three t-shirts work identically for a two-week trip and a six-month one, because you wash them at the same frequency either way. What changes with a longer trip is climate range, and that is handled by adding one mid layer, not by adding more clothes.
The rule that makes it work
Every item must pass one of two tests. Either it combines with other items to handle a condition neither handles alone, or it replaces another item entirely for a different context.
A fleece passes: it adds warmth under the shell and works alone indoors. A pair of smart trousers passes: it replaces the everyday pair for a restaurant. A dedicated rain poncho fails, because the shell already does that job. A second fleece fails, because two of the same thing is not a system.
Run that test over a packing list and it usually removes three to five items without reducing what you can cope with. That is the whole method.

That is nine to twelve garments plus two pairs of shoes, which fits a 35 to 40 litre bag with room for electronics and toiletries. The two variables are the insulated jacket and the shorts, both decided by the forecast.
What the system deliberately excludes
- Cotton. It absorbs water, gives no warmth when wet and takes a day to dry. This single swap does more for one-bag travel than any packing technique. See travel trousers vs jeans.
- A third pair of shoes. Shoes are the heaviest, least compressible thing you carry.
- Single-condition items. A poncho, a dedicated wind layer on top of a shell, a second fleece.
- Anything you are packing "just in case" without a named scenario. If you cannot say when you would wear it, it stays home.
- Full-size toiletries. Heavy, restricted at security, and available everywhere.
The one exception worth making is socks and underwear. They weigh almost nothing, they are the items most affected by a failed laundry night, and an extra pair costs you nothing in the bag.
Laundry is the actual system
Plan to wash something every second night and do a full load roughly weekly. Ten minutes at the sink covers base layers, and coin laundries or hotel machines handle the rest.
The step that makes it viable is mechanical: roll the washed garment tightly in a dry towel and press or stand on it before hanging. That removes most of the free water and roughly halves drying time, which is what turns "damp by morning" into "wearable". Match the fibre to the destination. Merino resists odour for days, which suits dry climates and infrequent laundry. Synthetics dry far faster, which matters more in humidity where merino may not dry overnight at all. Two merino and one synthetic is the split we would default to, and it inverts in the tropics. The shell appears in most rows, which is the argument for buying one good one rather than two mediocre ones. The insulated jacket appears only below about 10 degrees C, which is the single biggest packing decision on most trips.
Pack a system, not outfits. If an item cannot combine with something else or replace something else, it is not earning its place in the bag.

Do packing cubes actually save space?
Compression cubes genuinely reduce volume for soft items such as base layers and fleece. Ordinary cubes mostly organise rather than compress. Neither helps with shoes, and leaving an insulated jacket compressed for weeks damages its loft, so use them for the journey rather than for storage.
What is the most common one-bag packing mistake?
Taking one heavily insulated waterproof coat instead of a separate mid layer and shell. It permanently merges two functions, so on a warm wet day your only rain protection is also a warm coat. Separating them costs almost no extra volume and roughly doubles the temperature range you can handle.
