Face Fabric
The face fabric is the outermost woven layer of a shell, the part you see and touch. It carries the DWR finish and takes all the abrasion.
It does not make a jacket waterproof; the membrane or coating behind it does. What the face fabric determines is durability, weight, packed size, how the jacket looks, and how quickly it wets out.
What it controls
- Durability, through yarn thickness and weave. See denier and ripstop.
- Weight and packability, since it is usually the heaviest component.
- Appearance: colour, sheen and hand, which decide whether a jacket reads as clothing or equipment.
- Wet-out behaviour, because it is the layer that absorbs water once DWR fails.
Why wet-out starts here
When the DWR on the face fabric wears down, the fabric soaks up water. The membrane underneath still blocks liquid water, but vapour can no longer cross a saturated layer, so the jacket stops breathing and you condense inside it. The jacket has not failed; its outermost layer has. See wet-out.
Reading a spec
A description like "40D ripstop polyester" tells you yarn thickness, weave reinforcement and fibre. Nylon generally resists abrasion better and dries faster; polyester holds colour better under sun and costs less. Neither says anything about waterproofing.
