Layering System

A layering system is the practice of combining a base layer, a mid layer and a shell so that the same small set of garments covers a wide temperature range.

It works because insulation is additive and the three functions are separable. Three thin layers trap more air than one thick layer of the same mass, and you can remove them one at a time as conditions change.

The three jobs

  • Base layer: manages moisture, moving sweat away from the skin so you are not chilled when you stop.
  • Mid layer: traps air. This is where warmth comes from.
  • Shell: blocks wind and rain, and provides no warmth of its own.

Confusing these is the commonest packing mistake. A heavily insulated waterproof coat merges the mid layer and shell permanently, so on a warm wet day your only rain protection is also a warm coat.

Why it beats one thick garment

A single warm coat has one setting. A three-layer system has roughly six useful combinations, covering something like 0 to 30 degrees C, and it packs smaller because the layers compress independently. That is the argument for carrying a system rather than outfits, set out in the practical travel wardrobe.

Fit between layers

Each layer needs room over the one beneath without being loose enough to lose contact. That is why shells are sized up and base layers are sized close, and why a shell that only fits over a t-shirt has stopped being useful.
