Cycling to Work in the Rain: What Actually Works
Ride in a waterproof shell over your work clothes, fit full mudguards, and accept that you will be damp from sweat rather than rain. Mudguards prevent more wetness than any jacket, and ventilation matters more than a high breathability rating.
The core problem of wet commuting is not rain. It is that a waterproof layer traps the heat and moisture you generate pedalling, so you arrive wet either way. Everything below is about controlling which kind of wet you get and how much of it reaches your work clothes.
Where the water actually comes from
Sit with this before buying anything, because it changes what you buy. On a typical wet commute, water reaches you from four sources and they are not equally important.

The order matters. A rider in an expensive jacket on a bike with no mudguards arrives with a wet stripe up their back and soaked shoes, and blames the jacket. Mudguards are the cheapest and highest-impact thing on this list, typically under the price of a pair of gloves, and a front mudguard with a long flap is what keeps your feet dry.
Sweat is the second problem and the one no purchase fully solves. A person riding at a moderate commuting pace generates a lot of heat, and a waterproof membrane can only pass vapour so fast, particularly once its outer face is soaked and has stopped breathing altogether. This is why breathability numbers matter less on a bike than ventilation does.
Two strategies: change at work, or don't
Almost every commuting setup is a version of one of these, and the right answer depends on your commute length and whether you have somewhere to change.
Strategy one: ride in cycling clothes, change at the office
Works well for rides over about 30 minutes or any route with real hills. You ride in whatever gets sweaty, you shower or change on arrival, and your work clothes travel dry in a pannier or a dry bag inside a rucksack.
The costs are real: you need somewhere to change, somewhere to hang wet kit so it is dry by evening, and you are carrying two sets of clothes. If your workplace has no drying space, you will put on cold damp kit for the ride home, which is the single most common reason people stop commuting by bike in winter.
Strategy two: ride in your work clothes under a shell
Works well for rides under about 20 to 25 minutes, on flatter routes, at a deliberately unhurried pace. You put a waterproof jacket and waterproof over-trousers on over what you are already wearing, ride slowly enough not to sweat much, and take the outer layer off at the other end.
This is the Dutch approach and it is genuinely better for short commutes, because the time cost of changing twice a day exceeds the discomfort of a slower ride. It depends on two things: riding slowly enough that you do not overheat, and over-layers that go on and off fast enough that you will actually use them.
That second condition is where most setups fail. Conventional rain trousers require you to stop, find somewhere to balance, take your shoes off or force them through a narrow ankle, and reverse the process on arrival. Faced with that in a light drizzle, most people just get wet. We look at the alternatives in waterproof over-trousers for commuting.
Choosing the jacket
A commuting shell has a different brief from a hiking shell, and the differences are worth naming.
- Ventilation over rating. Pit zips and a two-way front zip you can open from the bottom while riding do more for you than a higher breathability number. You are producing heat continuously and the fabric cannot keep up.
- A longer back. Riding position lifts the hem and exposes your lower back. A dropped tail covers the gap; a straight hem does not.
- Cuffs that seal. Water runs down your forearms to your wrists when your hands are on the bars. Adjustable or elasticated cuffs stop it reaching your sleeves.
- Visibility. Wet commutes are dark commutes for half the year. Reflective detail on moving parts, sleeves and ankles, reads to drivers far better than a static panel on your back.
- A hood that fits under or over a helmet, and does not blind you. A hood that rotates with your head is a safety feature; one that stays put while you look over your shoulder is a hazard.
On the fabric numbers themselves: aim for around 10,000 mm hydrostatic head as a floor for a commuting shell, more if you sit on a wet saddle. Beyond roughly 20,000 mm the rating stops changing outcomes. Breathability figures are almost impossible to compare between brands because at least four different test methods produce different numbers for the same fabric, which we unpack in how these numbers are actually measured.
Feet, hands and head
The extremities are where wet commuting stops being an inconvenience and starts being genuinely unpleasant, and they are usually solved last.
Feet. A front mudguard with a long flap does most of the work. Beyond that, overshoes or waterproof shoe covers keep road spray off, and they matter more than waterproof shoes, because a shoe that lets water in over the collar will stay wet all day whereas a cover comes off and drips in the stairwell. Our shoe protectors attach to the bottom of over-trousers and are aimed at exactly this problem.
Hands. Wet hands get cold fast at 20 km/h even at moderate temperatures, and cold hands make braking and gear changes worse, which is a safety issue rather than a comfort one. Waterproof gloves work until water runs down your sleeves into them, which is why sealed cuffs matter. Bar mitts look ridiculous and are dramatically more effective than any glove.
Head. A thin cap under the helmet with a small peak keeps rain out of your eyes, which is the actual problem, more than it keeps your head dry. Glasses in rain are a personal call: clearer vision from spray, worse vision from droplets on the lens.
Getting the bike ready
Three things, in order of how much they matter.
- Full-length mudguards. Not clip-on stubs. Full guards with a front flap that reaches close to the ground. This is the highest-value change you can make and it costs less than a jacket sleeve.
- Lights, front and rear, on in daylight. Rain reduces visibility for drivers more than it reduces yours. A rear light in daytime rain is worth more than any amount of reflective clothing. Our rear light and headlamp cover this.
- Wet-weather brake awareness. Rim brakes lose a significant amount of stopping power when wet and take a rotation or two to bite. Disc brakes are far less affected. Either way, brake earlier than feels necessary for the first week of autumn until the habit returns.
A pannier or a dry bag beats a rucksack in the rain for one specific reason: a rucksack sits against your back, which is the part of you that sweats most and the part a shell ventilates least. Moving the load to the bike removes a whole category of dampness.
Fit full mudguards before you buy a jacket. Then choose the jacket for how well it vents, not for its breathability number, and match the strategy to your commute length: change at work if it is long, ride slowly in a shell over your clothes if it is short.
Where VEAR fits, and where we came from
Our first product, in 2015, was rain trousers for bike commuters. The Kickstarter campaign for it failed, raising $18,040 of a $25,000 goal from 192 backers. The diagnosis was right and the design was not, and what came out of that feedback was the idea that became the VEAR Pants: over-trousers that open along their entire length so they go on over shoes, over work clothes, without sitting down or taking anything off. We are not aware of another over-trouser that opens the full way down both legs, though we would not claim to have surveyed every product on the market.
The VEAR Jacket uses the same shell fabric, a coated 100% polyester tested by SGS in June 2023 at a hydrostatic head of at least 20,000 mm under ISO 811:2018 and 20,881 g/m²/24h vapour transmission under JIS L 1099:2021 method B-1. It carries reflective detailing and mounting for a clip-on rear light. What we cannot tell you is a windproofing figure, because no air permeability test has been run on it; the full picture including the gaps is on the SGS reports and their limits.
Worth saying plainly: none of this beats mudguards.

Are waterproof cycling trousers worth it for commuting?
They are worth it if they are quick enough to put on that you will actually use them. Over-trousers that require removing your shoes tend to stay in the pannier during light rain, which defeats the purpose. Look for full-length or long ankle zips. For rides where you change at work anyway, they matter much less.
Why do I still get wet in a good waterproof jacket?
Usually sweat rather than rain. A waterproof membrane passes vapour slowly, and once the outer fabric soaks through it stops breathing almost entirely. Road spray from a bike without mudguards is the other common cause, producing a wet stripe up the back that people misattribute to the jacket leaking.
Do mudguards really make that much difference?
Yes. On wet roads, most of the water that hits a rider comes off their own tyres, not from the sky. Full-length guards with a long front flap keep spray off your feet, legs and back. They are the cheapest meaningful upgrade to a wet-weather commute and they change more than a more expensive jacket would.
How do I keep my feet dry cycling in the rain?
A front mudguard with a flap reaching close to the ground does most of it, since foot soaking is mainly spray rather than rainfall. Add overshoes or shoe covers for heavier rain. Waterproof shoes are less useful than they sound, because once water enters over the collar they stay wet far longer than a draining shoe.
