Merino vs Synthetic Base Layers for Travel

Merino stays wearable for several days without smelling, which is why it suits trips with intermittent laundry; synthetic dries faster, costs less and survives more abuse, which suits humid climates and hard use. Most one-bag travellers are best served by two merino and one synthetic.

Both fibres wick moisture and both work when damp. The real difference is odour resistance versus drying speed and durability, and which of those matters more depends almost entirely on how often you can wash things and how humid the air is when you hang them up.

Two of these rows are commonly misunderstood.

Odour resistance is not a marketing claim, it is the practical difference. Merino's structure and lanolin residue slow the bacterial growth that produces smell. It genuinely means fewer shirts in the bag, and on a one-bag trip that is a volume saving, not a comfort preference.

Drying speed is more decisive than people expect in humid places. A merino t-shirt rinsed at night in Singapore in November may still be damp at breakfast. In dry air it will be fine. The same garment behaves completely differently depending on the destination, which is why blanket recommendations fail.

Understanding the numbers on the label

Two specifications are worth reading and both are usually printed.

GSM, grams per square metre, is fabric weight. For travel base layers:

Micron applies to merino and measures fibre diameter. Lower is finer and softer. Around 17 to 18.5 micron is comfortable against most skin; above about 21 micron people start to notice prickle. The old "wool is itchy" objection is almost always about coarse wool, not merino.

Blends muddy the picture usefully. A merino and nylon blend, often 85/15 or 87/13, keeps most of the odour resistance and adds meaningful durability, which addresses merino's biggest practical weakness. For travel, blends are often the better buy than pure merino, and they are cheaper.

Why synthetic base layers smell, and what helps

Polyester's surface chemistry holds onto the body oils that odour-causing bacteria feed on, and ordinary washing does not fully remove them. The smell then returns almost immediately when the garment warms up, which is the familiar experience of a clean-smelling shirt that turns within twenty minutes of putting it on.

Three things genuinely help. Washing sooner rather than later, before oils set. Using a sports-specific detergent designed to strip oils, occasionally rather than every wash. And avoiding fabric softener entirely, since it coats fibres and makes the problem worse.

Some synthetics are treated with antimicrobial finishes. These do reduce odour, they wear off over time, and the rate varies by treatment and washing. Treat a treated synthetic as somewhere between untreated synthetic and merino, closer to synthetic as the garment ages.

What to actually pack

The recommendation from the practical travel wardrobe is three t-shirts and one long-sleeve base layer. Here is how we would split them.

Choose merino when laundry is infrequent and the air is dry. Choose synthetic when the air is humid, the activity is hard, or the garment will take abuse. On a mixed trip, carry both and let each do the job it is better at.

Making them last

Merino: wash cool, on a gentle cycle or by hand, with a wool-safe detergent. No fabric softener, no bleach, no tumble drying, since heat and agitation felt the fibres and shrink the garment permanently. Dry flat if you can, since hanging wet wool stretches it. Store clean, because moths are attracted to body oils rather than to wool itself.

Synthetic: tolerant of almost everything, but avoid high heat, which can damage fibres and set odours in permanently. Skip fabric softener here too. An occasional wash with a sports detergent will do more for a smelly synthetic than any amount of ordinary washing.

Both: turn inside out before washing, which reduces pilling on the visible face.

Frequently asked questions

How many days can you wear a merino t-shirt without washing it?

Three to four days of ordinary travel is typical, and some people go longer. Heavy sweating shortens it considerably. Airing the garment overnight, ideally somewhere with moving air rather than in a bag, resets it substantially. This is the whole reason merino reduces how many shirts a one-bag traveller needs.

Is merino too warm for hot weather?

Lightweight merino, around 120 to 150 GSM, is comfortable in heat and often more so than synthetic because it handles moisture without feeling plasticky. The problem in hot climates is not warmth, it is drying speed: in high humidity a merino shirt washed overnight may still be damp in the morning.

Why does my synthetic shirt smell again straight after washing?

Polyester retains body oils that ordinary detergent does not fully remove, and odour-causing bacteria feed on the residue as soon as the shirt warms up. Use a sports detergent designed to strip oils, wash sooner after wearing, and stop using fabric softener, which coats the fibres and makes retention worse.

Are merino blends better than pure merino for travel?

Often yes. Adding around 15% nylon substantially improves abrasion resistance and durability, which is pure merino's main weakness, while keeping most of the odour resistance. Blends also cost less. For a traveller carrying a rucksack, where pack straps wear thin merino through, a blend is usually the better buy.
