Softshell vs Hardshell: Which One to Take Travelling

Take a hardshell if the trip involves real rain, and a softshell if it involves wind, cool weather and a lot of movement. A hardshell is waterproof and packs smaller; a softshell is more comfortable and is not.

The distinction is about what each garment gives up. A hardshell prioritises keeping water out, which requires a membrane or coating that also blocks air, so it is less comfortable and noisier. A softshell prioritises breathability and stretch, which means it will wet through in sustained rain. Almost every travel decision between them comes down to how much rain you will genuinely be out in.

What the two words actually mean

Neither term is a standard, which is part of the confusion. In practice:

The row that decides most trips is packed size. A hardshell that folds into a fist goes in the bag every day and costs you nothing when the weather is fine. A softshell is a garment you wear or carry in your hands, which means on a hot afternoon it becomes luggage.

The case for the hardshell

For a traveller crossing climates from a carry-on, the hardshell is the default, and the reasons are practical rather than performance-related.

It is the only layer that fails catastrophically. Being cold is uncomfortable; being wet through in cold wind is a genuine problem. A hardshell is insurance against the one weather outcome that can end a day.

It does not compete for space. A packable hardshell occupies roughly the volume of a small water bottle. A softshell occupies the volume of a jumper you now have to carry.

It layers cleanly. Because a hardshell provides no warmth, it stacks over whatever you need underneath, from a t-shirt at 20 °C to a fleece and an insulated jacket at 0 °C. That is the whole logic of the practical travel wardrobe.

Its weaknesses are real. It breathes poorly under effort, particularly once the outer face saturates and stops passing vapour at all. It is noisy. It feels like equipment rather than clothing. And on a cool dry day, wearing one is a slightly clammy experience for no benefit.

The case for the softshell

Softshells win in a narrower but very common set of conditions: cool, windy, dry or lightly showery, with you moving.

A brisk walk at 8 °C in wind is the softshell's home ground. It blocks enough wind to matter, breathes fast enough that you do not soak your base layer, stretches so it does not restrict, and feels like a jacket rather than a tent. Add light drizzle and its DWR handles it for a while.

They are also considerably better for city wear on the smart-casual question. A plain softshell reads as a coat. A crinkly hardshell reads as outdoor equipment, which is fine in Reykjavik and less so at dinner in Milan.

The failure mode is sharp rather than gradual. A softshell handles rain until it does not, and once it wets through it holds water, gets heavy, and takes a long time to dry, which in a carry-on with limited drying space is a bigger problem than it sounds.

The pattern: the softshell wins where rain is unlikely and comfort matters; the hardshell wins everywhere else, and especially where the bag is small. If you can only take one and you do not know the forecast, take the hardshell and a fleece. Between them they do everything a softshell does, plus the thing it cannot.

Reading the specifications, briefly

Hardshells are sold on numbers, softshells mostly are not, and the numbers are less comparable than they look.

A hardshell's waterproof rating is a hydrostatic head figure in millimetres, usually to ISO 811. Around 10,000 mm handles city rain; 20,000 mm covers pack straps and sitting on wet ground; above that, the number stops changing outcomes. Breathability is quoted either as g/m²/24h or as RET, and the two are not convertible, while the g/m²/24h figure itself depends heavily on which of several test methods was used. For softshells, the useful questions are different: is there a membrane at all, how much stretch, and does it have a DWR finish. A membrane softshell is warmer, more windproof and much less breathable than one without, and the marketing rarely distinguishes them clearly.

For either, seam taping matters more than the fabric rating. Untaped seams leak regardless of what the swing tag says.

If you can only take one shell on a trip that might involve rain, take the hardshell and add a fleece. The combination covers everything a softshell does and adds the one thing a softshell cannot do, in less space.

Frequently asked questions

Is a softshell waterproof?

No. Softshells are water resistant: a DWR finish sheds light rain and short showers, and some include a light membrane, but in sustained rain they wet through. Once soaked they stay heavy and take a long time to dry. If you expect real rain, a softshell is the wrong layer regardless of how it is marketed.

Can I wear a softshell under a hardshell?

You can, but it is an inefficient combination for travel. A softshell is bulky and provides limited warmth for its volume, so a fleece or a light insulated jacket does the same job in less space. The pairing makes more sense for cold-weather activity where the softshell is worn most of the time and the hardshell comes out occasionally.

Which is better for cold weather?

Neither, on its own. A hardshell provides essentially no insulation and a softshell provides only a little. For cold weather, the shell's job is blocking wind and rain while a separate mid layer provides warmth. A hardshell blocks wind more completely, which matters more than the softshell's small insulating advantage below roughly 5 °C.

Why does my hardshell feel clammy even though it is breathable?

Two causes. Under real effort you generate vapour faster than any membrane can pass it, so condensation forms. And once the outer face fabric saturates, the shell stops breathing almost entirely regardless of its rating. Restoring the water-repellent finish addresses the second cause; opening vents addresses the first.

Do I need both for a two-week trip?

Rarely. A hardshell and a fleece cover more conditions in less volume than a hardshell and a softshell, because the fleece gives more warmth per litre of pack space. Take both shells only if the trip has a genuine split, such as a week of dry hiking followed by a week in a wet city.
